- Hello everyone. My name is Christine Scymcyk. My studying at Molloy started three years ago. I have been practicing as a nurse for twenty six years and needed a change. To move out of my present position in the ICU, I was required to have a baccalaureate degree. So back to school I went. Its been a ride. Almost done. One more class after this. I must say thought I have learned a great deal and would love to continue my education. In nursing or business, I am not sure yet. I have heard great things about this class and to wearing comfortable shoes, because you will be running. I also LOVE all of New York. I can't wait to explore it even more. To see and learn about places I have not visited before. I was born in Brooklyn and spent the first six years of my life there. I go into the "City" at least five times a year to see plays, go out the dinner, see the tree, go shopping on Canal Street, Lincoln Center, years ago the clubs, South Street Seaport, the museum, Coney Island Aquarium, Bronx Zoo, I could go on and on, New York City has so much to offer. I like to people watch and I am very interesting in learning about other people's culture , just ask any one at work, I keep telling them I am not being nosy, I just want to know. I find it very fascinating. I look forward to exploring the greatest place on earth. I am very excited.
Pre Experience Feelings towards New York City
When I think of New York, I think of my birth place, Sunset Park, Bayridge, Brooklyn. I can still see and hear what seemed like a hundred kids running around the block or sitting on the stoop eating Good Humor Ice cream from the truck. Watching kids who could afford the .25 cents for a carriage ride with the oldest horse I ever did see pulling it. To later on in life finding out that was my grandmother’s cousin’s horse and carriage. And what a treat in the summer when the Whip It came around. We would beg my mother to go on it, once in a while we did. The mailman would push us around on his cart as he made his deliveries. We were out all day playing, whether it was jacks, jump rope, stoop ball, red rover red rover, etc. I moved to Long Island when I was six, but every weekend we would go visit my grandmas and grandpa back in Brooklyn. The Belt Parkway seemed like such a long ride. I remember the toll booths in Valley Stream, the smell of the dumps off the parkway, which is now Starrett City and the Verrazano Bridge, which meant we were almost there.
When I was in my 20s I remember seeing the play Cats, my first Broadway play. Clubbing it all night. Now I see a play at least once a year, Love It. After I had children of my own, I would take them to the Coney Island Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, and of course my favorite the Bronx Zoo. I still go there several times a year, even by myself. I enjoy going shopping on Canal Street and watching the Philharmonic practice during the day at Lincoln Center.
I get excited when I go in to see the Christmas tree at the “ROCK” every year. I really enjoy “THE CITY”. It seems to have everything. Butttt, I do like to take a shower as soon as I get home from there, because after being on the subway and the LIRR, I feel a little dirty. I am glad I live close enough to go visit the greatest city in the world any time I want.
